• Legal basis: Regulation (EU) 2017/1001 on the European Union trade mark.

UKIPO — Intellectual Property Office (United Kingdom)

• Territory: United Kingdom.
• Steps: filing, examination, publication in the Trade Marks Journal, opposition (2 months, extendable to 3), registration.
• Documents: receipt, examination report, registration certificate.
• Public register: trade mark search service on GOV.UK.
• In practice: an address for service in the UK, Gibraltar or the Channel Islands is required.

IPI — Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property

• Territory: Switzerland (and Liechtenstein under the customs treaty).
• Steps: filing, examination, registration, publication, opposition within 3 months of publication.
• Documents: filing confirmation, registration certificate.
• Public register: Swissreg.
• In practice: an owner without a Swiss domicile must give an address for service in Switzerland.

WIPO and the Madrid System

The World Intellectual Property Organization (Geneva) is a United Nations agency. It does not grant national marks: it administers the Madrid System, which lets you request protection in several member countries through a single international application based on a basic mark.
